1960 Bentley Continental Flying Spur

1960 Bentley Continental Flying Spur – Chassis # BC29LAR

Ownership History

This stunning 1960 Bentley Continental S2 Flying Spur was supplied new to Laurance S. Rockefeller, (son of John D. Rockefeller) and was delivered to his home in Pocantito Hills, NY on April 29, 1960. Mr. Rockefeller kept the car until September 14th, 1966, when he gifted it to friends Louise and Allston Boyer.

The Boyers kept the Bentley until February 1973, when it was purchased by Edward Robbins of Washington, DC. The odometer showed 16,800 miles at the time of Mr. Robbins’ acquisition. During the ensuing ten years, Mr. Robbins drove the car some 47,200 miles, before passing it on to its next keepers, John Edwards and Rick Wood of Richmond, California, with 64,000 miles now showing on the odometer.

Mr. Edwards and Mr. Wood kept the Bentley until December 6, 1999, when they sold it to Herbert Goodhall III of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, now showing 113,346 miles on the odometer. Mr. Goodhall cared for the Bentley until 2013 when it was traded to the Motorcar Galley in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The Motorcar Gallery then performed a major service, (at a cost of about $25,000) before selling the car to Mr. Xavier Maignan of Santa Paula, California, for $215,875, on November 15, 2014.

In the summer of 2016, Mr. Maignan commissioned an extremely high quality ‘bare metal’ repaint in the original Ming Blue color, at a cost of approximately $45,000. Mr. Maignan then kept the car in his collection until August 2024, when it was acquired by Team CJ.

BC29LAR today

Each of this magnificent Bentley’s owners has lavished care upon the car without regard to cost. Although never technically restored, the car has received constant mechanical and cosmetic ‘restoration’ throughout its life. A huge file of invoices and records is included in the sale, dating all the way back to the original handwritten Bentley factory notes. This file represents the most detailed and complete dossier I have seen with any car that I have offered over the last 30 years.

When we purchased BC29LAR in August 2024, she was already running and driving very well. Nonetheless, we immediately carried out an in-depth service, repaired the AC system (which now blows ice cold), rebuilt the window motors and resealed the steering rack. I then used this fabulous machine as a daily driver for the next several weeks, during which time she was 100% reliable and attracted more admiring looks and “thumbs-ups” than I have received in any other car. More importantly, everything on this car works as intended, even down to the VDO clock. She performed flawlessly for several weeks of real-world, everyday driving. She ran cool, with great oil pressure, and easily kept up with high speed modern traffic. As accomplished as this car is in the present day, it must have been a revelation when new 65 years ago!

Cosmetically, the car is in superb condition. The bare metal re-paint commissioned by Mr. Maignan in 2016 still shows beautifully, a testament to the quality of work performed 8 years ago. All of the chrome on the car is in excellent condition, and the magnificent interior is a true highlight of the car. The lavish burl walnut dash and door trim is in excellent condition, as are the hides and Wilton carpeting. I would say that BC29LAR only needs an engine bay detail to be considered Concours condition. As of today, it is somewhere between #1 and #2 condition car, in truly beautiful condition throughout.

Equipped with the new, all aluminum Rolls Royce/Bentley 6.2L V8 engine, and a smooth shifting four speed automatic transmission, this Bentley epitomized luxurious, high speed Continental travel. In 1960, this incredible motorcar would have been one of the most expensive cars in the world. At our very reasonable asking price, we believe it represents an excellent investment opportunity in today’s market. The sale includes a huge file of documents and invoices, original documents signed by Laurance Rockefeller, tools, jack and the original owner’s manual complete with original typed H.J. Mulliner notes.
